Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Montessori Education?

An education approach that supports the child’s natural development through freedom, structure, and purposeful learning.

Montessori education is both a philosophy of child development and a method of education developed by Maria Montessori. It is grounded in the belief that children learn best when their developmental needs are respected and supported through freedom within limits.

In a carefully prepared environment, children engage with materials and experiences that nurture independence, concentration, coordination, and emotional well-being. Adults guide by preparing the environment and offering meaningful choices, while the child actively directs their own learning.

What Ages Does Montessori Serve?

Montessori supports children across multiple developmental stages, from infancy through adolescence.

Montessori education is not limited to early childhood and spans a wide age range:

  • Infant & Toddler: 2 months to 3 years

  • Early Childhood: 3 to 6 years

  • Elementary: 6 to 12 years

  • Adolescence: 12 to 15 years

  • High School: Limited programmes worldwide

Each stage is thoughtfully designed to meet the evolving physical, emotional, and intellectual needs of the child.

What Does Montessori Do for the Child?

Montessori nurtures confident, capable, and independent learners.

Children in Montessori environments are commonly observed to develop self-discipline, independence, self-awareness, and a genuine love for learning. They demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, an organised approach to thinking, and academic competence rooted in deep understanding.

Montessori education focuses on the development of the whole child, preparing them for both academic success and life beyond the classroom.

What Is a Montessori House of Children?

A Montessori House of Children is defined by its practice—not just its name.

A Montessori House of Children follows the educational principles established by Dr. Maria Montessori. However, the term Montessori is not protected by copyright, meaning that the use of the name alone does not ensure authentic Montessori practice.

Schools may or may not be accredited by recognised bodies such as the Indian Montessori Centre. Parents are encouraged to understand how closely a school adheres to Montessori philosophy, training standards, and classroom practices.
